The Geologist theme preview from TTE 25: Milan in Focus
Stone stories, strata, and surface transformations
This theme—one of of nine—reflects a growing sensitivity to material surfaces, especially those that feel unearthed, weathered, or mineral-rich. At Milan Design Week, we noticed a surge of textures that evoked geology in all its forms: layered strata, fractured patterns, and finishes that looked carved, cast, or fossilized. Whether rendered in textile, stone, or composite, these surfaces convey a sense of grounding.

Stone, Sediment, and Silt
From terrazzo-inspired finishes to volcanic textures and petrified patterns, Milan Design Week offered a rich cross-section of designs that felt freshly unearthed. The Geologist captures a growing fascination with grounded materiality—where stone, mineral, and sedimentary motifs bring weight and tactility to interiors.

Inspired by Natural forms
Surfaces looked carved or crusted, finished in layers of mineral-like coating, with motifs drawn from marble, granite, and concrete. In textiles, we saw these gestures echoed in weave density, rugged yarns, and earth-toned palettes.

Some played it glossy and graphic, others favored muted greys and chalky textures—but all shared a reverence for geologic rhythm and form.
